As part of Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS), a multi-institutional healthcare system serving 14 communities in Illinois and Wisconsin, Prairie exemplifies its commitment to excellence by conducting more than 240,000 patient visits annually with over 40 clinic sites across Illinois and a team of 100+ board-certified physicians and advanced practice clinicians.

Project Goals

Prairie Cardiovascular recognized the need to enhance its digital presence and improve the functionality of its website by leveraging modern web development technologies. To achieve this, it sought the expertise of BizStream to transition its site to the Kentico Xperience 13 platform using ASP.NET MVC Core. Under the HSHS.org umbrella, this project aimed to:

Enhance Search Functionality: Improve the search experience for website visitors, including provider amd location search and general search.

Improve Site Management and User Experience: Enhance overall management, user experience, performance, and SEO of the site.

Address Marketing Team Challenges: The marketing team was experiencing major pain points with content management. The aim was to identify and implement improvements to streamline content creation and management processes, enhancing team efficiency and productivity.

Challenges

  • Integrating with HSHS.org while maintaining a separate theme.
  • Ensuring editors have control over defining which pages are shared between system, hospital, and organization sites and which are only available in one place.
  • Preventing regressions in the existing site.
  • Updating the existing page builder widgets to use the new theme with the existing design.

Solutions

  • BizStream developed a custom theme selector that applies a color palette specifically for Prairie Cardiovascular. This ensures visual consistency across the site while maintaining integration within the broader HSHS.org framework. The theme selector allows for easy updates and adaptability for future brands and branding changes.
  • BizStream re-architected the content model of the parent/child relationship between the Hospital System level and the individual hospital sub-sites to allow Prairie Cardio to fit seamlessly into the site with minimal impact on the content editing experience. This new architecture also provides the capability to add additional organizations similar to Prairie Cardio much more easily in the future.
  • BizStream introduced theming options for shared widgets across the HSHS and Prairie Cardiovascular sites. This allows each organization to maintain its unique visual identity while using shared components, enhancing both flexibility and user experience.
  • To address the complex search requirements, BizStream re-engineered the search functionality. This enhancement allows editors to more fully control what content is shared between the Hospital System level, the individual hospital sub-sites, and the Prairie Cardio organization's search features. It eliminates tedious duplication of content or other less-than-ideal solutions, such as creating pages with redirects so that they will show up in search in the right spot.
  • BizStream provided strategic architectural guidance that met Prairie Cardiovascular’s immediate needs and laid the groundwork for future projects. By designing a scalable and adaptable platform, we could expedite subsequent projects, such as the ongoing work with St. John's College. The foundational work done for Prairie enabled us to complete St. John's College’s project swiftly and efficiently, demonstrating the long-term value and foresight of our architectural decisions.
